Exhaust manifolds are an important part of vehicle exhaust systems. They are the first component of the exhaust system, and therefore, get some wear and tear. Exhaust manifolds are made of a porous metal that expands and contracts with temperature changes. Cracks can form in the exhaust manifold because of this expanding and contracting. It is important to recognize the symptoms of a cracked exhaust manifold, so that you can have the proper repairs done. Here are four symptoms of a cracked exhaust manifold:
- Visible cracking- A visible crack on the exhaust manifold is an obvious sign that you need repairs done on your vehicle. Be sure to pay special attention to the area around the bolts, as this is a common place for cracks to occur.
- Excess noise- When there is a crack in the exhaust manifold, gasses will leak through these cracks and cause unusual noises. The noises may be more noticeable when the car is cold. The noises may also sound like clicking or whooshing.
- Exhaust odors- You may be able to smell an exhaust odor inside the car, or more specifically, around the exhaust manifold. This is due to some of the gasses leaking through the cracks in the exhaust manifold and not exiting from the end of the tail pipe.
- Loss of performance- When there is a crack in the exhaust manifold, the engine may not be getting the appropriate backpressure needed to function properly. This can affect the vehicle’s performance.
